YouTube to Word: a document you can hand to someone else

Some notes need to leave your hands: a briefing for a manager, study material for a class, a record of a talk. A Word file is what most people can open without asking.

BlogPen writes the note as a .docx with real headings, so the navigation pane works, and every timestamp is a link to that second of the video.

A real example

TL;DR from the note

  • An ISS experiment is testing whether a handheld sequencer can bring DNA analysis to space, potentially supporting crew health and the search for life on Mars.1:03
  • Sequencing could help identify station microbes, check air and recycled water, and monitor biological changes in astronauts and other organisms.2:08
  • MinION is a compact, laptop-powered device that can deliver data quickly, with ground tests helping assess its performance in space.3:01

DNA Sequencing in Space

DNA Sequencing in Space0:04

  • Remember that DNA sequencing supports medical, biological, and crime-fighting research.
  • The ISS investigation will test whether the handheld MinION sequencer works in microgravity.
  • If successful, space-based sequencing could support crew health and the search for life on Mars.
“Among the items onboard was a hand-held DNA sequencer named "MinION."”0:54

Sequencing on the Space Station1:38

  • Use onboard sequencing to identify fungi and help microbiologists decide how to handle it without returning a sample to Earth.
  • Sequence microbes to monitor station air and water, including whether the water processor is keeping recycled water clean.
  • Use DNA to track lasting changes from spaceflight and RNA to observe real-time biological responses.
“A DNA sequencer can help identify those microbes as well as testing the cleanliness of air and water.”2:08

Testing the MinION2:49

  • Compare spaceflight sequencing of known samples with parallel ground experiments to evaluate the hardware.
  • MinION connects to a laptop or tablet, which powers it and collects sequencing data.
  • Begin analysis within 10–15 minutes of applying a sample, rather than waiting days for results.
“MinION, on the other hand, has minimal moving parts and plugs directly into a laptop or tablet, which supplies power to the device and collects the sequencing data.”3:30

What you get

  • One heading per section, in video order
  • The section's points as a bulleted list
  • A quote from the speaker under each section
  • Timestamps that link to the video at that second
  • Copy for Google Docs when you would rather paste than download

How it works

  1. Create a note from the YouTube link.
  2. Open the Word tab to read the document as it will print.
  3. Download the .docx, or copy it for Google Docs.

Good to know

Will the headings show in Word's navigation pane?

Yes. Sections are written as Heading styles, not bold text, so the pane and a table of contents both pick them up.

Can I paste it into Google Docs instead?

Use Copy for Google Docs in the Word tab. The headings, lists and links survive the paste.

Does the document quote the video?

Each section carries one verbatim quote from the transcript with its time, so a reader can tell the speaker's words from the summary.
